Changes to the practical test
Independent Driving.

Independent driving has become part of the practical driving test. From 4th October 2010 the practical driving test includes a section of ‘independent driving’. |
During your test you will have to drive by either following traffic signs or a series of directions or a combination of both. You have to do this for about ten minutes.
If you ask for a reminder of the directions, the examiner will confirm them to you.
If you go off the route it won’t affect your test result unless you commit a driving fault. The examiner will give you directions to get back on the route.
You will not need to have a detailed knowledge of the area. Obviously by the nature of this test you are not allowed to use a sat nav.
Support will be given to dyslexic candidates by the examiners, who are experienced in these matters. For more information, visit the British Dyslexia Association website at bdadyslexia.org.uk or read the relevant article at the Department for Transport website.
